How to get beautiful skin

How can I improve my skin?

Your not going to like it, but giving up (or at least cutting back on) alcohol, is probably one of the best things you could do for your skin.

New York nutritionist Jairo Rodriguez, who’s clients include designers and Vogue editors is not slow in telling them what he thinks about their alcohol consumption.  “I always joke with my patients, ‘If you want to get older, go ahead and drink”.

With sugar also being demonised for its affect on our health. We are seeing non alcoholic drinks being served in heaps of bars, Henry Summer in Northbridge do a mean mocktail, And you won’t be disappointed with the huge range of classic cocktails being offered at Bar Lafayette in the CBD.

As more people become sober curious, and either cut out alcohol or cut down on it, they are pleasantly surprised at the improvement in their skin.

The No 1 killer is dehydration.

Alcohol affects any mucous membrane, from the pancreas and liver. If you compare a drinker, (20 years or so) and a non drinker, of the same age, the non drinker will look at least 10 years younger. Dehydration ages you.

Alcohol inflames the tissue, and systemic inflammation to the skin caused by alcohol creates a histamine reaction—that creates the redness. If you choose to continue drinking, it can become a permanent, and your  facial redness will not go away. Using face wipes filled with preservatives, products that are too strong for you or used incorrectly can all add to the redness, so don’t freak out, it may not all be down to your alcohol consumption.

Can you reverse the damage that drinking alcohol has done to your body?
“Yes, you can, so that’s great news. Your liver and your skin can regenerate, but obviously you have to give up alcohol, or at the very least cut back. It’s hard to get the collagen back but with a good therapist, good quality products and time you can make massive improvements. If you have been drinking for 20 or 30 years regeneration is not going to happen overnight.

The type of alcohol you drink will affect your skin
If you do drink, what’s the best alcohol to choose? “Different alcohols have different effects on the skin, there is some evidence to say that the clearer the alcohol the better it will be at getting out of your system. So vodka, gin and tequila would be good choices.

How often you drink and what age you are make a difference as to how much you can drink
Your age actually has an effect on how your body processes alcohol. When you are 20 years of age you can get rid of alcohol in roughly 3 hours. When you’re 40 years old, it takes an average of 33 hours. So if your 40 years of age or above you need to make sure that you only drink every other day, or you are constantly topping up your alcohol and not giving your liver a chance to repair itself.

Drink more water
“If you’re going to drink, drink water with it to increase that diuretic effect. Dehydrated skin is awful looking. You can also increase your hydration by drinking herbal teas and eating high water content foods such as cucumber and watermelon.

Use good quality products
